Happy foot…

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 27, 2006

This is Happy Foot (temporary name). My sister bought him for me for Christmas :)

Once I’ve seen the movie I’ll pick of the penguin names for him. I assume you know what movie I’m talking about.

This post might also indicate that I’ve managed to get hold of a digital camera. Yay! Courtesy of my Dad (Arigato Tousan!).

This might seem weird but…

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 23, 2006

…why can’t all tubes of toothpaste have the flip top? Why do some (and I’ve noticed it’s the opaque ones) have a screw top? The flip top is so convinient. You can snap it open with the back of your toothbrush and you don’t have to worry about dropping the cap.

Perhaps there is some deep and logica meaning I just can’t see…but I doubt it somehow.

My first rant, ha ha ha….

Small Town versus Small Town

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 19, 2006

Last week I went to Mossel Bay for two days. Strangely I would have liked to stay longer. I say strangely because, while the town has grown amazingly since I last saw, the people still have a small town mentality. Which I don’t like. In case you hadn’t guessed.

But now I have to contrdict myself. In some ways the small town mentality or rather lifestyle is rather nice. For one it means there less stress and hype. It certainly is nice to have a break from the city. Things are more relaxed. Unfortunately the things that are relaxed include service, to the point of incompetence and disinterest.

But even so. I have an attachment to Mossel Bay, even before my dad moved there, that I never quite understood and still don’t really. Happy memories maybe and that beach certainly doesn’t hurt either ;)

Crayfish Drivers

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 13, 2006

The V&A waterfront in Cape Town attracts a certain type of person, I’ve noticed. No, let me be more precise. It attracts a certain type of driver. These people, let’s just call them not my kind of people for our purposes, enter the waterfront district and completely and utterly forget how to drive. Granted, some of them didn’t actually know in the first place, so they’re forgiven.

It’s not necessarily speeding. In fact it’s often quite the opposite. The list grows with things such as stopping in the middle of the road for no apparent reason, not using indicators in an extremely busy traffic circle, pulling out in front of a car that is going a significant speed, weaving into the other lane aimlessly, treating speedbumps like land mines and (my personal favourite) pootling.

It’s like a natural phenomenon, only not so natural come to think of it.

Another thing that bears mentioning is the same behaviour in some drivers when they are caught in the rain. It’s almost as if the minute a drop of water hits their windshield they, once again, completely forget how to drive. One could cause some serious trouble standing on the bridges over the N2 and chucking glasses of water on passing motorists.

I (and some people I know) call these people crayfish drivers. This stems from a story in the paper awhile back concerning a number of people buying their drivers licenses with money and different items, amongst these being crayfish. A novel idea but corruption nonetheless, despite the urge to laugh.

Ah, work…

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 12, 2006

There’s nothing like a nice long break to make you feel a bit adrift and in the mood to go back to work. And there’s nothing like your first day of work to make you long for your break again.

I don’t mind work. It’s necessary. But I do like to be doing something enjoyable. What I’m doing at the moment (while I search for a real job) is working in retail. Again. It’s thankless work sometimes, second only to waitering.

But I also cannot be idle and I cannot be without money of my own. Christmas is, after all, the season, if not to be jolly, than at least to spend money impulsively on lavish gifts for yourself your family and friends.

Digital?

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 10, 2006

I did something a few days ago that some people (after my explanation) might consider ironic. I prefer to think of it as sad and pathetic.

I’ve mentioned before that my interests and my career (3D Animation) both heavily involve computers and computer related things. One would expect someone in my position, someone who for example needs to take pictures of textures and reference material, to have a digital camera or at least access to one. I have no such thing.

I therefore had to commit the previously mentioned heinous act of buying a disposable camera (oddly, I also do not own an old fashioned film camera). I am simply desperate for some recent pictures of myself, my family and my surroundings.

It’s, well, kinda embarassing.

Holiday

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 9, 2006

I think this is a good time to give a little warning. I’ve been updating for the past few days (probably only three come to think of it) ALOT. Don’t get used to to it. What I said in my first ever post about my interest waning and my time becoming short was not a lie. I am currently on holiday so, for this reason, I’ve nothing better to do than surf the web, lie around and update my blog. Well, more or less anyway.

The other thing I suddenly have a lot of time for is doing online quizes (I blame my sister for getting me onto these). She did this key one and so (of course) I felt compelled to do it also. Part of me thinks I created this blog simply for the pleasure of posting my quiz results…..God, I hope not.

What sort of key are you and what do you unlock?

You actually don’t unlock anything; you’re the winding key for an old grandfather clock. Few people know how important you are unless you aren’t there, but there are a few who treasure you all the time. You help people keep moving forward, but you also help them through the present by reminding them of the past.

Ever changing….

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 9, 2006

Most of the things I would consider my interests and hobbies at this point in my life are not things I’ve been particularly interested in for the majority of my life. In fact my knowledge of the computer, around which many of my interests revolve, is only as old as this millennium. The high level of computer literacy I now enjoy, and that is now second nature to me, is even younger.

The reason I’m mentioning this is because I often come across people saying, whether it be in articles, blogs, on forums or in person, when commenting on their interests, that it’s been something they’ve always been interested in and have always known they wanted to do. It’s the same when they mention their passion. So many people seem to have a passion that they’ve known about and have dedicated themselves to for a large percentage of their life. Not only have they done this, but they’ve always instinctively known what that passion is. Odd.

I, personally, do not seem to have a passion. I like and even love many, many things and activities. My interests are varied and the list is long but never do I consider any of them my passion. With very few exceptions, none of the things I had an interest in when I was younger do I still hold in the same regard.

I think for this reason, my ever changing tastes and desires, I’ve also never become a master at anything. Without sounding boastful (hopefully) I am a very capable person. There is very little I can’t do when I put my mind to it. But those things I do, I’ll only do well or good, never exceptional. Jack of all trades but master of none? I think so.

I wonder which is better?

Laksa Night

Posted in Uncategorized by akichan on December 8, 2006

I have a confession to make. I’m addicted to laksa. Chicken Laksa to be precise. Hmmmm….it’s good stuff. Hence I make it all the time and, oddly enough, everyone I’ve ever made it for has also loved it. So it just goes to show, I’m not so weird after all.

For this reason (the reason being all my friends love Laksa too), I’m holding a Laksa Night this month. Just a group of friends and a HUGE pot of Laksa (to the brim). Invites have/are being sent to the relative people.

Perhaps the real sin is that I love Laksa even more when it’s covered in Mayonnaise ;P
